     We are scared of silence, of loneliness, of lonesomeness and do not dare to be alone. To be alone is not solitude. Solitude is the ability to be by oneself, or the ability to not depend on others. But would one know that one is depending on others? Is the mind able to realize on its own that it is being dependent? That is it being dependent on thought, believes, creed, money, wealth, fame as well as other people all the time. How is this so?<\/span><\/p>\n

     The Yogis know solitude through the basic principles of yoga that we practice in our daily lives. We do not do yoga merely by breathing and practicing the Asanas on our yoga mats but we also incorporate ethical principles into it and carry it along with us everywhere we go.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

     Moral and ethical awareness is the philosophy of action that in turn acts as the basis linking the relationship between us and the world.  Therefore, holding onto morality and ethics is the duty of human beings so as to abide by international rules and bring about order. If we have this, our lives will function smoothly. Everything we do will be geared towards righteousness. Yoga is built on the foundation of ethics which is Niyama<\/em>. There are five levels to self-purification, one of which is Solitude (Samtosa<\/em>). It is the acceptance and understanding of what is happening; it is sufficiency, contentment with who we are, so that our desires, our wants decrease or ease altogether. What is desire? Is it the want of possession, the want to own something when we are stimulated and want more of that stimulus? Therefore, desire may not be something forbidden or terrible after all? Is this so? When you see a luxury car, when you see a beautiful mansion, when you see something beautiful, something cool and awesome and so on the process of wanting to own it begins.<\/span><\/p>\n

     But it is process of the mind that induces desire. How does it do that? When you sense,  when you see beautiful things, if you are alert in that instant; in that moment in which you have a thought of desire entering your mind you have to be aware. You have to be aware of this process of the mind that requires a lot of energy and acute awareness. At this point, desire is nothing but thought. It will cease by itself. But when desire enters the mind and you let the thought continue it will remain. But if you can be aware of how it operates, and don\u2019t continue with that thought, want will ease by itself. When this process happens repeatedly and comes naturally, you will enter into solitude. You are able to extinguish your desires and wants without any effort. You are able to extinguish the cause of sorrow smoothly. You are self-sufficient, content with what you have, with who you are. This is already very good. But, how is it that the pillars of self-purification does not end at just level 2?<\/span><\/p>\n

     The reason that Solitude is at level two from a total of five levels of self-purification (Niyama<\/em>) is because Solitude can ultimately bring about laziness, lifelessness and indifference. At this point the ego is still there; I am very content with myself, I am proud, arrogant and enjoying in what I have achieved, in what I am, I don\u2019t need anything else, I don\u2019t care what others say. This is where we can imply that Solitude is happiness, contentment that we will not be attached. But this is where we are still attached to our ego, our ego is still bloated. Nonetheless, we will not be caught up here. But surely, our ego will be strengthened from here. We will not feel pain, we will move forward into level 3 towards Penance. Penance is the self-practice that gives us energy. However, here even though we have the energetic force we still lack self-understanding. Therefore, we have to understand ourselves in order to delve deeper into our inner being, into level four which is Swatayayah.<\/em> But even here, the ego or self still exists. We move into the next level, level five where the self reduces to become respectful (Shiva Pranitan<\/em>). This is to let go of all individuality; that is the \u201cme\u201d eases entirely. So now just try to imagine that if you were to practice asanas and pranayama after having purified yourself, what kind of asana practice would that be?<\/span><\/p>\n
